The Edition

The Edition is an arts magazine that showcases the creative projects of students such as drawings, poetry, photography, creative writing, and more. It’s published during the fall and winter semesters, where it’s distributed to over 350 students, faculty, and alumni across Canada.

MY ROLE

Led a team of 10 designers and writers to create and distribute the magazine

We set a theme, choose submissions, and design all the pages from scratch every semester. Most recently, my team was comprised of 8 layout designers and 2 content writers, who created written work around the theme and interviewed members of the arts community.

Key Tasks

  • Screened candidates and conducted interviews to form the team
  • Led weekly meetings and design critiques
  • Wrote and submitted funding applications
  • Consolidated our theme brainstorms into a cohesive branding guidelines document
  • Liaised with the printing company and University’s accounting department to ensure that the magazine would be distributed on time

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

Double the copies printed

  • Previous Editions had only 150 copies printed, but our latest one had 350 copies
  • Increase in copies was due to a request for our magazine to be available at the University’s spring open house, and for extra copies to be stored for future promotional purposes

Negotiated a 10% budget increase

  • Due to the successful efforts of our marketing team, we reached a record number of submissions, meaning that I had to increase the number of pages in the magazine if we wanted to showcase everyone
  • Emphasized the impact of the magazine on the student arts community to the funding team, who agreed to the budget increase

Streamlined the Design and Editing Process

  • Held additional design critiques throughout the week to maximize the feedback opportunities for designers
  • Designed holistically -- had members design spreads, not individual pages for a more cohesive final product
  • Made Gantt charts and meeting notes public for all team members to see and stay in the loop
